Change is good!

I made it to Friday unscathed! Not really...I cried at work once this week. Whatever. Moving on.

I'm sure those of you who aren't Britney Spears fans are SICK of hearing about me meeting her, but, to that I also give a big, fat WHATEVA!! And a smile because I still like you. :)

I'm going to mention her once today and then 4 times next week when the "I'm a Huge Fan" video series comes out. WOO HOO for THAT!

The whole experience and weekend of meeting her has changed my mind about so much stuff- it's weird. Not only has it opened my eyes to a career change, it's also made me want to purge my life of "shit" I don't need....

When I move from Charleston to Cali, or wherever I end up, I'm doing a MAJOR evaluation of the clothes in my closet. I have a LOT. You've seen pictures of my closets here in Charleston. Packed to the max, plus one free-standing rack. It's a little crazy.

Only a small glimpse into ONE of my full closets.

I wouldn't say I'm materialistic, but I'm a Libra. It's a proven Astrological FACT that Libra's love all things beautiful. I am no exception to this fact.

I love pretty clothes and shoes mainly- but that doesn't mean I discriminate from pretty house decor and cars and jewelry and make-up either, so no worries. HA! That also means that I have a lot of stuff. I do.  The sad thing is, I've tried numerous times to do the whole "buy something, throw away something" and I still have a lot of clothes.

And by no means is it shitty quality stuff. It's Anthro, it's J. Crew. There are Target pieces and online boutique pieces, sure, but for the most part, it's not like I can just throw away a bunch of cheap shit. I pride myself on buying well-made pieces.

ANYway, point is, I feel like Britney Spears when she shaved her head, and I just want to PURGE everything except the stuff that hold memories for me. of course, that's not happening, but it's really made me think hard about getting rid of some things.

It feels good to feel different....

HAPPY friggin FRIDAY!!!

Meeting Britney Spears...The Finale!

Parts 1, 2 and 3

The big day finally arrived. To some it may sound ridiculous, but the past 13 years, since I first heard "...baby one more time" I knew I've needed to meet this woman. She's had some hard times, sure, but don't we all? Maybe our problems are less severe than any Britney has had, but she's under a magnifying glass, for one. I can totally understand how things can just become too much. She's an entertainer and is doing what she loves to do, and HAS been since she was 8 years old. I admire her. I do.

Never in a million years did I actually believe I would get to meet Britney- let alone sit down and talk with her....yet today it was all coming to fruition. It still hadn't totally hit me. I had had my moment of weakness and emotional release the day before, but I still was pretty composed when I woke up this morning!

I didn't sleep very well the night before-tossing and turning- and waking up too early. Thankfully, I didn't need to do my make-up or hair, as told to me by Audrey (producer). The reason was because I was getting my hair and make-up did!!

I was taken to Andy Lecompte hair salon! Britney gets her hair done here, among many other celebs. Angelo did my hair for the day and I had my make-up done. I wanted to tell the make-up artist that it
was kinda useless to do my make-up now, because it'd all be off by the time the interview rolled around, but I just enjoyed the moment.

Thank you Angelo, for your sweet Aussie accent and swift, gentle hands, for doing my hair so sweetly the day of my Britney meeting.

Sitting in the star chair. Film crew behind me. All on their phone, which cracks me up.

During the process, Lindsay decided to spring on me the very last surprise! She let me in on the fact that I'd be interviewing Britney backstage at The Ellen Show where she was appearing that day.

We had lunch before heading to the studio lot...which was about the time I started feeling sick. Not from nerves, but just nauseous. I think it had a lot to do with the car ride and being in the VERY back. I apparently get car sick sitting in the very back of a stretch SUV.

I felt awful and for about an hour and a half I just wanted to lie down- I wasn't nervous, no desire to see Britney, nada. It was weird...

After a can of ginger ale and getting the hell up OUT of that SUV, I felt better-  I had an overwhelming sense of sadness right before I was about to meet my idol and I didn't like that ONE bit. I think dread was setting in, knowing this was my last day in L.A. and I would have to go back to  reality- that's never fun after any type of vacation.

On the back lot of Warner Bros. Studios where The Ellen Show is filmed!

Last minute question changes with Lindsay...Travis filming. He got his crying moment from me, so he's all good.

Fanning myself backstage at The Ellen Show- bring on the sweat and nerves! This was right before I started crying from seeing Britney on TV. heh heh

Fixated on Britney. Watching live backstage as she interviewed with Ellen. Nerves setting in. Yikes.

Our greenroom/holding area.

I’m getting butterflies typing this- remembering what those seconds and minutes felt like leading up to meeting her. Of course, I kept replaying in my mind how I imagined the meet-and-greet happening: Me crying hysterically, but somehow pulling myself together to ask her questions. I drop cards at her feet, but she laughs and say’s it’ll all be OK. LOL. I’m so weird.

As I said, I was told I had about 5-6 minutes with her and two of her bodyguards came up to meet me when we first got to the studios. Understandable. The woman is very well protected, that’s for sure. Not being used to being a possible “threat” it kind of made me uneasy, but it’s probably something you get used to when working with celebrities.

After Britney got off stage from The Ellen Show, there was about a 20 minute lag and then I was told to go with Travis (camera crew) down the hall. It was about that time!

I waited with Travis down the hall from our greenroom for what seemed like forever. Psy, the Gangnam Style guy, was on the show that day also (As you all probably know. Britney did the dance live. Lol) and walked by a few times. He was very nice and cordial by the way. Hahaha

Meanwhile, Travis was getting some film of me hanging out in the hallway- I can’t wait to see THAT footage because:
#1. I started crying. Again.
#2. I was nervously shaking my cards, fidgeting, etc. and
#3. He apparently got a great shot of me in the forefront and Britney behind me as she was entering the green room.

There were a few rules, I found out later, that were given to everyone from Brit’s manager. There could only be ONE photograph taken (thank God for video still shot!) and no one else could speak to Britney except me. HEY! I’m cool with that! But having so many rules the interview I’ve dreamt about having for 13 years changed a bit. I honestly wanted to sit down and joke with her and just casually talk. The one thing I love about Britney is her goofy personality- especially in documentaries you can tell, when cameras are “OFF” so to speak, that she’s a normal human being who loves a good laugh.  Me too, girl! Me. Too.

Things didn’t go quite as planned.

When I walked in the room Britney was supposedly going to be sitting down in the chair across from mine and we would greet each other, but her people seemed to really be rushing and wanted me down there in the room NOW. So, with Travis trailing behind me, I walked the short  25 feet to the green room……On the way in I caught a glimpse of all of her “people” huddled around the door but only recognized Larry Rudolph (manager) and Jason Trawick (her to-be hubby). Thanks for making me feel less nervous, y’all….NOT.

So, I walk in and Britney is RIGHT at the door almost, and all I see is her perfectly coifed blonde up-do and gorgeous pink dress. I kinda panicked inside, because I was told she would be sitting. As a Public Affairs professional myself, I’m a coordinator and facilitator of interviews, so I get that things don’t always go off as planned, but for some reason I freaked out somewhat. I guess mainly I just wasn’t sure why she was still standing up. Sit down, Britney! SIT yo self down, girl!

Once I stumbled in, she turned around and I started crying. Dumbass. Lol

The first words spoken to me from Britney Spear’s mouth were, “Aww, don’t cry sweetie.”

Great.

Then she put out her hand.

I had read somewhere (probably Perez Hilton. Bah!) that she’s very particular about her personal space. Could be true, could not be true, but I wanted to make sure I didn’t violate any of her space by tackling her with a huge awkward hug right off the bat…So I did the polite thing and asked if I could give her a hug.

“Of course!” was her reply. Thank God. Hahah

When I hugged her I got caught on her hair bun. Shit. Luckily it didn’t fall out of place.

She asked me my name and asked where I was from.

Mic’s were put on us and as she was being mic’d up she made one of her now infamous faces. Loved it! I laughed. Probably a little too much.

I didn’t notice the cameras, but I could FEEL her manager and people behind me. Later my friend Nathan told me that they were staring holes into us. Gheesh.

I asked her questions I had come up with and don’t remember a damn one of them.

I remember a few of her answers, but most are a blur. The one answer I was most surprised about was when I asked what she does with her free time, since she is so busy. One of the things she said she loves to do is “hang out with her girlfriends.” I just thought that was super cool- When you see Britney on TV, you don’t see her with her girlfriends. You see her with a bunch of dudes who are surrounding her for her “protection.” It was so nice to hear about her “normal” lifestyle.

I could have asked her 1,000 more questions, but I didn’t dare go over my allotted 5-6 questions…although I did sneak one in about her sense of humor. I wanted to ask her about her future music career and where she’s headed with that, but I totally forgot. The one thing I regret!

The ending of the interview was a bit awkward. I wasn’t sure when or how to end it because I just felt rushed, honestly. So I said, “Well, that’s all the questions I have today,” and we shook hands.

Afterwards I felt as though a 100 pound weight had been lifted off of me and I was suddenly extremely tired.

It was over so fast.

Later while waiting for our red-eye flight from LAX, I received an e-mail from Audrey (producer) saying she had spoken to someone on Britney’s team after the interview and they all agreed I was very sweet and genuine. Britney even commented that she, “loves her southern girls.”

The experience was truly the best thing that has happened to me- it was a fun time with wonderful people.
It also made me re-evaluate my professional life.

The entire weekend I was surrounded by the PopSugar team obviously loving what they do every day. And talking to some of them I realized they have an educational background same as mine. I’ve always wanted to write and edit for the entertainment industry, but never thought it was possible. Why is that? I’m not sure. I’ve gotten stuck in a rut in my “safe” job. Now, I have a new professional goal that includes doing something I LOVE to do, and not just something I do because it’s good money and safe.

It’s going to take a few years before I reach this goal, but now that I know what I want to do, I’m very happy and have a new outlook on reaching that goal.

Hope you guys enjoyed reading about the whole experience and are as thrilled as I am to see the video footage from the weekend, so check back around October for that!

Britney Spears and I after the interview :)

The show's over folks. NO pictures, please!!!!

Meeting Britney Spears....Part 3

Read More: Part 1 and Part 2

I couldn't hold off until Friday to write this, so I'm sharing early :)

Before I forget, here's a shot from the previous day's shopping outing! necklace and bag from BCBG!

Here we are on Day 2 already- which was how I felt in the moment as well. SAD! My trip was half over ALREADY! haha. I'm so stupid. I still had yet to meet Britney and was already worried about leaving for home. I really need to learn how to live in the moment, ya think??

So, after Day 1 of singing lessons and a new BCBG outfit, I just KNEW there had to be dancing involved this day! Britney is known for her dancing skillzzzz.

We did the usual routine- met the crew in the hotel lobby, who at this point we had fallen in love with, and did some footage of us climbing into our chauffeured SUV. We drove to  North Hollywood and parked down the block from our next surprise. I loved that the crew tried to keep it all a secret each day! I'm a girl who loves surprises, but I always end up being too smart and figuring it out. I used to be that way with Christmas growing up! My mom could NEVER surprise me. I always just KNEW what I was going to get.

This day I happened to see a sign near where we were that said "Millenium Parking." Millenium?? As in, THE dance studio to the stars? I started freaking out! This would be a DREAM for me as I love to dance and dancing to Britney is a hobby of mine I do on the regular. lol.

After about 20 minutes of waiting, we were finally driven around front and hopped out. I started squealing when I saw, that in FACT, we were going to Millennium Studios for a dance lesson!!!

We walked into a smaller dance room where a woman was dancing to a song- I didn't recognize her at first, but as I got closer I was surprised to see I had seen her before! Her name was Ava Bernstine and she had danced with Britney several times, on her Circus and Femme Fatal tour and one of my FAVORITE tour dances (Hot As Ice) included this woman! PSYCHED!!!

We also happened to see her in tonight's GLEE episode that's dedicated to Britney! Go to minute 1:03! That's Ava!

She ended up teaching me (and Nathan joined in later) quite a few 8 counts to "Til the World Ends." I can pick up moves pretty quickly since I have SOME dance background, but this was a pretty fast dance! Had to go through it a few times. We asked her how long she usually has to learn this amount of moves for an audition and she said about 30 minutes. I could totally do it! :) Loved every second of this surprise!

Nathan, Ava and I doing our best Britney Spears pose. Nathan's being way dramatic- pay no mind to him. lol
Autographs from stars who have used the studios lined the hallway.
 Loved this quote.

The afternoon surprise was something totally UNEXPECTED for me, but was one of the coolest! We were taken to a store called MindfulNest. The back of this quirky gift shop housed a perfume/oil shop called KleanSpa, which is owned by Jennifer Hardaway. She has numerous scents to choose from, but today I was creating my VERY own custom scent! I love perfume. Beyond love. Obsessed, really. I was thrilled to get to do this! No photos since I was being filmed the majority of the time, but I walked away with a scent all my own.

She started by asking me what scents I liked. My answer was fruity with a slight musky tone. During the scent testing we discussed Britney's perfume line and how scents take us back to another time and place. I have to agree- and it was a bit emotional for me...this surprise felt tailored to me. My memories I carry with me are most treasured, as with anyone else, and smells remind me of events and vacations, etc. What we created was a wonderful scent that now reminds me of this exciting California trip. Everyone seemed to love it! I was put on the spot to pick a name for my perfume oil. Jennifer told me to sniff it and the name should pop into my mind. lol....didn't quite happen that way, but after thinking for a bit, I came up with "Peaceful Comfort." Smelling the scent made me comforted: knowing it was my own and also because I really felt like my grandmother was with me this entire time and was so happy for me. In the moment, I felt peaceful and just plain damn happy.

Check out her oils and products! She ships! You can buy my scent if you want, or pick from the scents she already has! It doesn't end at perfume oils either- body scrubs, lotions...beauty products in abundance. I recommend Fig & Fern, which is her most popular fragrance. I didn't expect to like it, but it's VERY interesting and smells delightful! Almost like fresh cut grass, but with a sweetness that reminds me of birthday cake- so those scents mixed together compliment each other very well.

After the create-a-scent session, we piled back in the car and I had a "moment"- my first cry since I had been there. Travis, the main camera guy, wasn't back in the car yet and I had stopped by the time he got in. lol. It was hilarious to see him "upset" because he missed this "good TV" moment. bahah. I told him not to worry because the closer the big moment came, the more emotional I would be. He seemed pleased.

The day was done. We went back to the hotel for more B-roll footage. This is me typing up my questions for Britney.

I loved our film crew. I miss them! This night, we were able to venture out of the hotel on our own. We both felt sad and naked with the cameras on us. hahaha!!! We learned to ignore them and just be ourselves. Now I know how reality stars feel! At first, it's super weird having cameras filming your every move- then they become family almost.

We ate at a restaurant on The Sunset Strip (where our hotel was) called The Eveleigh. Delicious!

The next morning, I would have one more surprise planned and then meet Britney Spears!! Can't wait to share the last part with you guys!

More to come, Part 4....tomorrow or Friday.

Meeting Britney Spears Part 2

Day 2: Saturday, September 2012

After a peaceful sleep and fabulous room service (thanks to per diem! LOVE YOU POPSUGAR!!) that was much neede, we awoke Saturday morning! We were only told to be ready by 8:30ish. Nothing else was told.

I tend to wake up early when I'm excited! Somehow Nathan slept in while I went exploring around the hotel. I took a few photos and sipped some much needed coffee as I strolled through the eclectic hallways (NOTE: Coffee from Starbucks ended up being a MUST-HAVE accessory for the weekend.)

I took a few photos from the pool area. Gorgeous sunrise and The Hollywood Hills!

After exploring awhile I set off back to the room where we, you guessed it, ate more hotel food.  Honestly, the food was top-notch, guys. We loved every bite!

I got dressed in my very NON L.A. outfit. lol Seeing what everyone else wore I felt like a little school girl in her lace dress from Target. *sigh* hehehe

We were met upstairs by the producer, Audrey, and camera crew (still awkward being filmed at this point!!) and were taken downstairs to the Mezzanine level to meet Lindsay Miller, PopSugar Editor in the L.A. office. LOVE her. Love her clothes she wore the entire weekend, too! Amazing Robert Rodriguez leather dress and Givenchy charm necklace. LOVE LOVE LOVE. See below!

We had our first sit-down interview on-camera with Lindsay. This being our first action shot, I was sweating bullets and very fidgety! Yikes! So much pressure. It was cool to finally see how production and filming works, with reality based shows such as this one. What you see is very real, but most likely you're saying the same things two or three times so they can get the shot and get different angles. So, yes, it's real, but done many times to get it 100% perfect!

Frankly, I loved it all!

After the interview we hopped in our escort car and headed to my FIRST Britney related surprise!! What was it? I had no idea- and was especially confused when we rolled into a neighborhood. Everyone in the production crew was coming in and out of a residential house, and my super smart deductive skills determined it had to be singing or dancing. Come on, y'all! That's what Britney does.

After waiting in the car with our driver, Curtis, for roughly 30 minutes, we hopped out and headed toward the house (all being filmed!). When we walked in the house, we were greeted by a tiny woman behind a keyboard playing and singing. Great. Right then I knew I was going to sing. And I'm no singer.

The woman turned out to be Lis Lewis who worked with Britney Spears on her "In the Zone" album! OMG...fabulous! She was super sweet and nice and was really understanding when I couldn't hit a key...she did say I did well and had a nice speaking voice, but I KNOW I'm no singer. Still, it was fun! You'll have to wait for the video to see more :)

Lis Lewis, Nathan and I
Once that stress was over, we went to film b-roll near the famous Mulholland Drive- overlooking Hollywood. The views were fantastic!

The rest of the day was b-roll footage gathering and ONE more surprise! I, sadly, didn't get ANY photos from the second surprise of the day....BECAUSE.......I was trying on CLOTHES at BCBGMAXAZRIA, baby! I was going to get an entire outfit for the big day of meeting Britney! When I got back to the hotel I was curious to know how much it all cost- after seeing the price of the leggings alone I HAD to know! Total came to around $1,300 for an outfit and accessories. Talk about being SPOILED! I seriously cannot thank PopSugar enough.

As a Britney fan, I was disappointed in myself that I didn't know she loved to shop there! And what's even more awesome is that it's TOTALLY my style! Loved it! No pictures, but you'll see my outfit in the video. (Do you hate me right now for making you wait??!)

The day concluded with us crashing in the hotel room....and there was still two more days of surprises left....I never wanted this weekend to end and it was only Day 1!

Part 3 to come Friday!

Meeting Britney Spears Part 1...and I got a Twitta!

I never ever thought I'd have a Twitter account- I despised it and let everyone know it! Surprise, surprise...I now have a Twitter. So if you're interested in my random thoughts and quirks 24/7 follow me @JennyStripling. I'm pretty cool...I guess. :)

So, today, I thought I would share my whirlwind experience of my meeting with Miss Britney Spears- Princess (Queen?) of Pop, my friends!

Background Info (again!): Those of you have been following me for a while KNOW I love that woman 100% and always have- even through her downs and even more during her "ups." I've followed her since the Mickey Mouse days and loved her immediately when she came out with "...baby one more time." What's funny is that I've ALWAYS always told people I was going to meet her one day. I never, ever dreamed it was honestly happen.

I entered a random contest from PopSugar.com (you need to go follow them on Facebook and Twitter so you’ll be first to see the video series!) called “I’m a Huge Fan” where they hook up a huge fan with their FAVORITE celebrity and a fun-filled weekend FULL of surprises.
Surprises indeed! All-expenses paid trip to L.A. for myself and a friend was amazing itself, but it didn’t end there…

Friday my friend Nathan and I high-tailed it to the airport to catch our flight to L.A. We were actually booked on different initial flights to our connector in Atlanta- Well, MY flight was delayed BIG time…like 4 hours delayed. Nathan got to L.A. about 3 hours before me. I didn’t mind much, seeing as how the end result was going to be worth it!

When I finally made it to LAX, I met up with Nathan and walked down to baggage claim where we were greeted by a camera man and our producer for the weekend, Audrey. Oh…and a personal driver, thankyouverymuch. Awesome! Do you understand how much I love being drove around? Tons.
We started filming immediately- I was asked basic questions from our main cameraman, Travis, about why I love Britney, my favorites things about her, how I came to enter this contest, how I was feeling- the works!

Our drive from LAX to our hotel, The Andaz, West Hollywood, was a short trip, but being that it was dark made it difficult to do any sightseeing from the car windows. I was just so happy to see that nice, fluffy duvet. I was exhausted. Little did I know my weekend activities were only just beginning......the only thing our itinerary said for the day was "SURPRISES!!" and "MORE SURPRISES!"

Room Service Friday night- BEST FRIES EVER!!

Stay tuned for Part 2 Wednesday!

(Hotel side note: The Andaz was once a Hyatt and nicknamed The “Riot Hyatt” because of some of the famous rock bands that frequented the hotel. One of my favorites, Jim Morrison, from The Doors, lived there until he was reportedly evicted by management for hanging out a window by his fingertips, dangling over the pavement.

The scene from Almost Famous where Russell Hammond cries out, "I am a Golden God!" is a reference Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant who allegedly said the same thing while looking over Sunset Strip from one of the hotel's balconies in 1975. Pretty cool, right?!)

Did I meet Britney Spears? In case you all were wondering.......

I WON!

I met freaking Britney Spears- my idol, the woman I've loved ever since the MMC (Mickey Mouse Club) days- I MET HER this past weekend. I know. Please control your emotions.

Sorry it's taken me forever to update everyone on this HUGE news, but along with this awesome news, my grandmother, who had been very sick, died the same week I found out I had won. Talk about a roller coaster of emotions. It was the best and one of the worst weeks of my life. I was very close to my grandmother, but I know she would have been happy for me.

I'm not even sure where to begin telling the story of my adventure, but here's a photo for starters:

See? No bull. I really met her! The one and only photo we were allowed. Her people are VERY strict.

I actually had an entire weekend full of surprises thanks to PopSugar, but I'm not sure I really am supposed to tell everyone just yet, since there will footage in their "I'm a Huge Fan" video series. YES! I'm going to be viral! lol. I'm super excited and hope I didn't make a fool of myself too bad...who am I kidding...I just hope that got my good side.

In the meantime (the videos should pop up online around the beginning of October) check out the other episodes from this series by PopSugar!

I've literally dreamt of meeting Britney since she bursted BACK on the scene in 1999 with "...Baby One More Time." Not many people can say they won a contest to meet one of their favorites. I'm still in disbelief.......
